You named your child what!?

So some of you may or may not know that I'm a nurse that works with new mums and babies once they leave the hospital. I have an awesome job (well, most of the time).

Through the course of any given day I sometimes talk up to 20 new mums and I always ask "So what did you name your new little one?" and I always respond "Oh that's lovely" or "Oh isn't that a nice name." Often, gotta tell ya, people name their kids fucking awful names.

"Why yes Heaven spelt backward is just a original and fantastic name! Oh and your other twin's name is Treasure with a 'z' - that has stripper CEO of a company written all over it"

I think hearing new kids names all day often gives me some insight into the trends of baby names i.e. If you name your child after something expensive, odds are you can't afford it. It's why I threw Breaking Dawn across the room when I read "Renesmee". I could just imagine some trashy lovely mother naming her kid Renesmee cause it sounded unique and she done liked it. My co-workers and I all placed bets as to when we would come across that name next (fortunately we haven't).

"Now get over here and help mama serve Sunday dinner Renesmee"

So today, I came across this article.  The headline is "'Twilight' inspires top U.S. baby names".  Oh fuck people.  Can I just say that if you're naming your child after a Twilight character, maybe you should rethink the whole procreation thing in general?

Edward is apparently number number 137 on the list, up 11 spots apparently.  Don't get me wrong, Edward is a nice name.  However, if you're naming a kid after Edward because you liked the character, I'm thinking you should have also considered Oedipus

Oedipus - giving 'keeping in all in the family' a totally different meaning since the 5th century BC

Now as for Jacob and Isabella, those have been top names for ages.  I don't think I'll be naming any future kids those names cause all that pops into my noggin' is Twilight when I hear them.

This would be an awkward family photo non? "Um Jacob can you stop cuddling your sister? Thanks"

Now Edward, Jacob, and (Isa)Bella are all 'common' names and fewer and fewer people actually choose  names from the 'top name' lists.  It's all part of the unique names trend.  People like to get kreeatif at every chance.  So apparently this whole creative trend combined and with Twilight being everywhere the name 'Cullen' moved up 297 spots to 485th on the list of names.  Oy.

"Cullen PUT that cigarette down NOW!"

So would you ever name your kid after a character in Twilight?

Honestly, if I ever have a daughter I want to name her Isabella Jane, after my great grandmother and mom. Ggramda was named Isabella. But now I'd probably think twice about it just because I *wouldn't* want people to think that I named her after Twi. I'd def never name a son Jacob. ;)

Nope, but if I ever became a crazy cat lady, I'd have a Cullen-clan of kitties for sure. Plus, "Jasper" is such a great name for a boy kitty. Fortunately my cat was named Jake long before Twi. He's definitely more of an Edward though. ;)

@Meg - I think if you're naming a kiddo after someone and they had the name Edward or Isabella then big deal. They are nice names. On the other hand after the Twilight cast? Weird.

@Jen - I know a Jasper kitty. Funny little guy too! As long as you don't accumulate as many cats as vampire that were sitting around for the big non-fight of BD then we won't call the SPCA on you. :P

I would definitely be one of those sad sacks naming their son Cullen if I was having a baby now. Ain't gonna lie. It's either that or Robward. Where was that on the list. LMAO!!

CC, we have to do something about your banner. LOL!

XOXO

Nope, especially cause I don't live in a community where these names are the norm. But I wouldn't name my children their Serbian equivalent either.

Hell! No!

Though, one of my son's middle name is Jacob. However, Jacob is my last name, and my father's last name, and he was born before I ever saw or read or heard of Twilight.

I reiterate. Hell no, I wouldn't name my kids after Twilight characters. LOTR, well, now that's another story. I'll have ask Frodo Jacob how he feels about that, as soon as he learns to talk.

@Lisa - Really?!?! You would!?!? UGH! And of all the names, you'd pick Cullen? Oh for pete's sake. Not sure if we can be friends now. Yes I need to fix the banner. I keep forgetting about it because I can still see it for some reason. Meh.

@Jelena - Yeah, I really wouldn't even consider it now. I used to consider Isabelle, but I now have Twilight as an association.

@Myg - LMAO!I'm surprised you didn't consider Legolas, I mean, Frodo? Was he born with big hairy feet or something?

@CC - What? You don't like the sound of Cullen Donny Parker? LMFAO!!

If people want to name their children after Twilight characters, it is ok with me.

I do not plan to have children but I have names I have liked for years and I admit I recently added Bella to the girls middle name I have.

Realize only those into Twilight would think you named your child after a Twilight character. If my sister heard someone's child being called Cullen it would mean nothing to her, just an interesting (or silly if you think that) name.

Darn I forgot I wanted to add that I head on the plane home from Florida that someone's child was names Noved which then pointed out was Devon spelled backwards. Don't know why but I thought it was funny that you mentioned Heaven spelled backwards in your post :)

I would love to hear some of the names you have heard!

I had always planned on naming a son Jacob Steven and this was well before Twilight was around. Now my daughter says I can't name him that because we're Team Edward and we can't have a Jacob in the family...lol! I'm with Jen, I could totally see myself naming a pet after one of the characters though :)

My oldest son is Cullen(11) way before the books. It's a great name! Though now that the books are popular I get less stares, and tons more conversation !

First I want to say I am seeing your banner for the first time and I love it!!
I gotta go...Rosalie is barking and needs to go out...and Victoria is crying in her crib. James has baseball today and we have to take Aro to the vet...his feathers keep falling out.
Yeah...I would totally use the evil vampire names before using any the good ones...if at all.
Oh..and naming a kid after twi is weird. Period. Naming them those names because of relatives...totally normal.

I laughed out loud... "Cullen PUT that cigarette down NOW!" and at Mrs P's "Rosalie is barking and needs to go out...".

I wouldn't use a twi name, but, ironically, my daughter told my youngest son that he was named after Justin Timberlake (not true) and I've never been able to fully convince him otherwise.

VW: nessa (that's just a little too close for comfort...)

i love this post. hilarious! i'd name a pet after a twilight character... not a child. and being someone with a unusual first name.. lemme tell ya, it's no picnic. at a twi conference someone asked tinsel corey for the meaning behind her name, her response. "my parents were hippies, tinsel, it's the stuff on christmas trees."

My favorite book and movie as a teen was Gone with the Wind so we named our dog Scarlett because my mother said she would kill me if I named our daughter Scarlett. She died this last year and I have convinced my children that our next dog will be Bella. But Jasper is a cool name for a pet too. Those of us that grew up in the 90's look how many Dylans and Tristans we have running around.
(90210 and Legeands of the Falls.)

Today I was picking my son up at school and I heard a lady calling her son and daughter over to her and they were named... Peaches and Stallone. Really.

Cullenary Curser said...

@mmMoxie - Could be worse!

@Micki - HA! Fat Bella I love it.

@Jayla - Oh jeez I didn't realize about Tinsel's name. I'm sure that was awesome growing up.

@nocona - my sister has a cat named scarlett. Oh yes, I remember the Dylans and Tristans of the 90s!

@Twilove - Wow. Just Wow. Not the worst name I've heard unfortunately.

Since I won't be having any more kids, this isn't an issue for me. Even before Twilight, I loved the name Isabella. And I have already decided the next dog's name will be Jasper. I really like that name.

We named our son Riddick. We wanted a name that was original and strong sounding. We did a ton of research into old names, and Riddick means Calm Meadow in Gaelic. We loved it.

A week or so before he was born, the movie The Cronicles of Riddick came out. We had absolutely NO. IDEA. of it's existence. A few weeks after the birth when I finally got out and around, people were asking me if we named our son after the movie.

To this day I still get the question, and I every time I want to stab someone. I am hoping he doesn't go through life being asked if he was named after a guy in a movie.

And who is darling Cullen's little friend in the picture? Igor? :)

StarlitViolets said...

@stilllookingformyvamp - At least Riddick was played by Vin Diesel! LOL!!! I LOVE that movie by the way.

@CC - HELL NO would I name a PERSON a Twilight name!!! A pet is another story, however. Mr. SV rescued a duckling from a parking lot and if we were going to keep it, its name was either going to be Japser or Jane. LOL!!!

My name isn't weird here in Ireland, but anywhere else it seems to be pretty much un-fucking-pronounceable. And for some reason every name I've ever thought of giving my future children is an unpronounceable Gaelic name like mine, lol. So no, I wouldn't give my kids Twilight names, not even a Bella after my grandmother.

LMAO at the treasure with a z. I hate names like that. Bob Geldof's kids all have ridiculous names. Peaches, Pixie and Fifi Trixibell. Fifi fucking Trixibell. I wouldn't call a dog that. Or Renesmee. Ew.

I actually really like the name Rosalie, but am done having kids, so it's a non-issue.
My 4 year old son (Diego - NOT named after the cartoon) had 3 Bella's in his preschool class this year, and that more than anything would keep me from chosing that name for a child. I don't want my kid having the same name as everyone else.
I did however, name a couple of Mourning Doves who nest in our backyard every year Edward & Bella.
Great post.
BTW...I was at the park recently & heard a mom say...."D'artangion, time to go". Seriously??? That poor kid is going to get beat up!
